ABOUT
BEHIND THE LENS
My emergence into photography was purely accidental. Formally trained as a Visual Merchandiser for fashion and home décor retailers, I began my love of photography with a simple point and shoot camera while exploring the many streets, neighbourhoods, and green spaces of Toronto in my spare time.
Born in the historic town of Cobourg, Ontario, I was early influenced by architecture and history. Recently I have come to embrace the rich colours, patterns, and textures that can be found amongst our city streets and in our green spaces in and around Toronto.
Scott Young finds the picturesque in the infinitesimal, often neglected elements rather than the grandeur that is so often equated to our perception of beauty. His photographs achieve a binary opposition – the subjects are within reach, accessible and monetarily worthless, and yet there is a central element of ephemerality. The physical properties that are exalted are also fleeting, slowly disappearing from view and from existence. In the context of our everyday lives, we wearily stare upon the surroundings which engulf us by devouring the specs of colours, textures and patterns only to have them automatically and instantaneously registered into a composite whole. Scott Young’s photographs, on the contrary, illustrate that fragment of a moment where beauty timidly exists and thus present us with a distinct experience of looking.
